Kybella®
Submental fullness also referred to as Double Chin, is a common facial aesthetic condition that affects both men and women. This fullness can be caused by aging, genetics and weight gain. Often, no amount of diet or exercise will make this condition go away. A double chin can make you look older and heavier than you actually are. After extensive training and experience, Dr. Cynthia M. Gregg, Dr. Cindy Wu, and our Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialists Specialists provide patients in Cary, Raleigh, and the surrounding areas of North Carolina with excellent and natural results with KYBELLA® injections.
What Is KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® is the first and only FDA approved nonsurgical treatment that contours and improves the appearance of double chin (submental fullness). This is a prescription medicine that must be administered by a licensed healthcare professional. In our office, Dr. Cynthia M. Gregg, Dr. Cindy Wu, Nena Clark-Christoff, RN, CANS, Andrea Crane, RN, CANS, and Melissa Stockyj, RN, CANS are fully experienced in administering KYBELLA® injections.
KYBELLA® is a non-surgical, 15 to 20-minute in-office treatment session. It destroys fat cells when injected into the fat beneath your chin. Once the patient’s aesthetic goals are achieved, re-treatment is generally not necessary.
Before KYBELLA®, the only option for treatment of submental fullness was liposuction, which is a surgical procedure.
How Does KYBELLA® Work?
Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in KYBELLA®, which is a naturally occurring molecule, in the body, that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells can no longer store or accumulate fat.
How Is KYBELLA® Administered?
KYBELLA® is typically given in a 15 to 20-minute in-office treatment session. One of our Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialists Physicians will give you a series of injections into the fat under your chin. They will customize your KYBELLA® treatment based on the amount of submental fullness you have and your aesthetic goals. The number of treatments needed depends on the amount of submental fullness you have. Many patients achieve visible contouring of their chin profile in 2-4 treatments (treatments are given at least one month apart), and some will require up to 6 treatments. Once your chin profile has improved, most patients do not require additional treatment.
Will I experience Any Side Effects?
The most common side effects of KYBELLA® treatments are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness in the injection site. In clinical trials, the incidence and severity of most side effects decreased with subsequent KYBELLA® treatments. Before administering KYBELLA®, we offer topical anesthesia and/or ice, for patient comfort. With this protocol, our patients have experienced little discomfort during the treatments. The major side effect is swelling and although the patients “feel fine” there is some “social” downtime if signs of swelling and redness are of concern.
How Do You Know KYBELLA® Is Effective?
KYBELLA® has been tested worldwide in more than 20 clinical studies that included more than 2600 patients. 79% of patients treated with KYBELLA® reported satisfaction with the improved appearance of their double chin after treatment. Patients also reported improvement in self-perception and feeling that they looked younger and happier with their new chin profile. 41% of patients in the clinical studies received fewer than six treatments.
