An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a procedure that removes the extra skin and fat of the abdomen and repairs the paired six-pack muscles (rectus muscles) that may have separated (diastasis) after childbirth, weight gain, or aging. After an abdominoplasty, patients enjoy a flat abdominal contour and a stronger core. The abdominoplasty procedure is individualized to the specific patient depending on the condition of the abdomen.

Abdominoplasty is performed in our fully accredited surgery center under general anesthesia. The procedure length varies depending on the amount of tissue to be removed. Incisions are placed in the bikini line area and around the belly button. The extra skin and fat is removed, and the muscle tightened. The sutures are all dissolvable and placed under the skin, so no sutures need to be removed. A dressing will be placed over the incisions, and you will be placed into a compression garment, which will be worn for 6 weeks.

In general, patients may return to work within 2 weeks. In approximately 4-6 weeks, core strengthening activities may be resumed. Swelling will continue to decrease with time. The scars will continue to heal, and will become thinner and lighter in color at around 12-18 months.
