Just as we change our wardrobe from Winter to Spring, we also need to adjust our skincare products and routines.

Even with a good skincare routine, Winter has taken a toll on your skin! Spring is the time to exfoliate away dull skin and clogged pores that have developed over the dry winter months. Adding exfoliation to your at-home routine and receiving professional exfoliating treatments, such as chemical peels and facials, will reset your skin for Spring and bring back your radiant glow.

With Spring comes more humidity, allergens in the air, more sun exposure, and increased perspiration, especially outdoors. Touching your face can exacerbate irritation from those factors. Cleansing morning and night will help reduce the effects of environmental aggressors and your body’s increased sweat and sebum production. Winter cleansers are generally thick and creamy to help with dry skin. For Spring, a lighter cleanser, often water-based, is preferred. Double cleansing is often advised at the end of the day, especially if you are outdoors and very active. Double cleansing would be an initial cleanse with an oil-based balm or gel followed by a water-based gentle cleanser. Your aesthetician is your best source of determining the proper cleanser for your skin each season.

Antioxidants are your warm weather friend! Antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E, Ferulic Acid, and Niacinamide are critical in protecting the skin from damage from free radicals that can cause premature aging, inflammation, UV damage, and more. Your aesthetician can advise you which antioxidants will be best for your skin, but as a minimum, wear a pharmaceutical-grade topical Vitamin C daily.

All skin types need deep hydration to protect and feed the upper layers of the skin. The moisturizer you select needs to meet the needs of your specific skin type. Generally, a lighter moisturizer than you used in Winter is best. Hyaluronic Acid is a good option in a Spring moisturizer. No one moisturizer fits all due to individual oil production and hormonal factors.

Sunscreen is your most important product for warmer weather. Of course, it is vital to wear sunscreen year-round, but with warmer weather, the sun more intense, and the added time outdoors, choosing a broad spectrum, high SPF, mineral-based sunscreen is your best protection against the sun’s damaging rays. Frequent application of your sunscreen is also essential to have consistent protection. Tinted sunscreens are a great option for warm weather because they give you a wash of color without makeup’s heavy look and feel.

Spring clean your skincare products! Discard expired products, old makeup you don’t use, and mascara that is not fresh, clean your makeup brushes, and start fresh for Spring.
