“Prejuvenation” combines prevention and rejuvenation to describe the desire to prevent or reduce unwanted skin changes before they happen with non-invasive treatments instead of rejuvenation which focuses on restoring youth after damage occurs. Younger patients are increasingly aware that there are many things they can do to prevent signs of aging.

The first step in prevention is skincare, protecting the skin from sun damage. A good sunscreen, preferably a mineral one, is imperative for avoiding aging and burning UVA and UVB rays. Along with sunscreens, using medical-grade skincare products selected specifically for the individual’s skin condition will help stimulate collagen, hydrate, and help slow down the aging process.

Injectable treatments are used for ““prejuvenation” at the first signs of lines or wrinkles. For example, neuromodulators (Botox® Cosmetic, Xeomin®, Dysport®, and Daxxify™) address forehead lines, glabellar lines (11 lines between the brows), crow’s feet, and necklines before they become profound and evident. For our “prejuvenation” patients, we often use Xeomin® because it is the purest form of botulinum toxin type A, so it has the least chance of your body developing antibodies over time.

Injectable dermal fillers, primarily hyaluronic acid, are composed of naturally occurring sugar molecules. As we age, there is a gradual volume loss in the foundation of our skin. For “prejuvenation” and eventual rejuvenation, we can reduce the rate of age-related volume loss by using hyaluronic acid fillers to replace the volume and help stimulate collagen rebuilding. Along with replacing volume loss, dermal fillers address deepening nasolabial folds, the pre-jowl area, and the lines around the mouth. With the wide variety of fillers available, it is vital to consult with an experienced injector who can select the best products for your skin and desired outcome.

Skin tightening procedures such as microneedling, IPL, ultrasound, and other skin care treatments are popular “prejuvenation” techniques to stimulate collagen and elastin to keep a youthful glow.

All these “prejuvenation” steps can help you age with natural-looking, more youthful skin.
