National Skin Care Awareness Month is a time to appreciate the largest organ on your body – your skin. Skin Care Awareness Month is a time to honor the skin you’re in, recognize the importance of good skincare practices, and celebrate the incredible journey your skin takes through your lifetime. The timing couldn’t be more appropriate; the start of fall is the perfect time to refocus on skin care, reevaluate your routine, and find the optimal ways to improve and maintain your overall skin health.
Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you no longer need sunscreen! Preventive skin care is a year-round activity, and sunscreen is an integral part. Despite shorter days and cooler temperatures of fall and winter, the sun’s UV rays are just as damaging. To protect your skin year-round, you must keep wearing a broad-spectrum sunblock; we recommend mineral, with an SPF of at least 30.
Some tips for keeping your skin healthy year-round:
- Always extend your products onto your neck and chest; these areas are also exposed to the elements just like your face and age equally.
- The best time to moisturize your body is right after a shower and towel drying, to help retain the moisture on your skin.
- NEVER attempt to perform skin care treatments at home. With social media influence, people are attempting to use products found online for treatments that need to be performed by a licensed medical aesthetician or a certified aesthetic nurse injector with approved equipment and products. This can lead to adverse reactions, injury, or other harmful results; it is not worth the risk to your skin to try professional treatments unless you are a trained professional.
- Have an annual body check by your dermatologist; in addition, do a monthly self-check to watch for new or changing moles or spots. If you notice a spot that is changing in size, shape, or color; bleeding spontaneously; constantly itching; painful; or simply new, contact your dermatologist for an evaluation. Skin cancer can easily be treated when caught early.
- Visit an aesthetician or aesthetic nurse for professional treatments to keep your skin healthy and hydrated. They can help you choose the right products and treatments for the season to meet your individual skin care needs. With the vast array of skincare products available, a professional assessment of your individual skin condition is the only way to effectively keep your skin glowing and healthy.
- Wear sunblock year-round and remember to reapply it every 2 hours when you are in the sun for long periods of time.
- Avoid picking, scratching, rubbing, or squeezing bumps on your skin. Have your aesthetic provider treat any irritated areas to avoid the risk of infection, prolonged healing time, and scarring.
- Eating a healthy diet and staying hydrated helps your skin stay healthy right along with your body.
