One of my favorite tools to use to address the common problems of both deflation (loss of volume) and descent (skin sagging and loss of tone) is Sculptra® Aesthetic from Galderma®. I’ve been injecting it for 15 years and am one of the leaders in the state. It is an excellent product for people who want a slowly improving natural look by stimulating their own collagen. Not only does it add needed volume, and it improves fine lines and skin quality by giving people a “Sculptra Glow.”
Collagen is one of the protein support structures of the skin’s dermis. As we age, we lose about 1% of collagen per year, and by the age of 45, we have lost 25% of our collagen. The more extrinsic aging we have experienced, such as sun exposure, smoking, and pollution, the faster this occurs.
Sculptra® is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, which has been used for years in dissolvable suture material. Depending on individual needs, I typically inject 2-4 vials at six-week intervals until my patient, and I are satisfied with the results. Before and at the end of the treatment sessions, I take photos so that we can review the results. It is FDA approved to last 25 months, results I typically see in my clinical practice.
I refined my technique in the last year to change from injecting with a needle to a cannula. Patients have given me great feedback on this as it decreases discomfort and the risk of bruising. Typically I can treat each side of your submalar area (below the cheekbone where we hollow out) with a small poke.
I’ve tried other products that act more quickly and take less time to inject, but I have always come back to Sculptra® as I feel that gives my clients the best results for volume loss in the lower cheek. I also use it in the temples. I think of it as your foundation to build your collagen and often use it in conjunction with other treatment modalities. Other HA dermal fillers, neuromodulators, and skincare products can act synergistically for optimal results. People don’t know what you have done because of the natural effect of collagen rebuilding; they just know you look better and more youthful.
