Q. My breasts are too large and heavy for my body. I’ve tried massage, hot packs, exercises, and even seen a physical therapist, and none of these treatments eliminate the discomfort I experience daily with my heavy breasts. Am I a candidate for breast reduction surgery?
A. Breast reduction surgery can both lighten the weight and rejuvenate the shape of your breasts. Due to genetics, gravity, and time, breasts can enlarge and sag, resulting in heavy breast tissue in the lower and outer parts of the breast. Reduction surgery can change the weight and appearance of the breast, resulting in a more elliptical, or oblong shape. Breast reduction removes the heavy breast tissue in the lower and outer portions; reshapes the breasts so they are rounder; and raises the nipple position. The result is a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and the elimination of the discomfort caused by the weight of large breasts.
Women who have difficulty finding supportive bras and tops that fit their breasts, suffer from shoulder, back and neck pain, and experience deep groves from their bra straps benefit greatly from breast reduction surgery.
The best candidates for breast reduction are healthy, non-smoking women who are at or close to their ideal weight. Breast reduction surgery is a life-changing experience for most women, greatly improving the appearance of their breasts and restoring their self-confidence.
