/  Blog   /  Skin Brightening for Hyperpigmentation and Sun Damage

With the end of summer, many of us notice either new or recurring hyperpigmentation from our time in the sun, and now we want to eliminate those dark spots! A few tried-and-true medical-grade aesthetic treatments, such as chemical peels and IPL Photofacials, can quickly improve unwanted sun damage. In addition to aesthetic procedures, we recommend at-home use of skin brighteners to enhance the effects of treatments.

Tranexamic acid and Hydroquinone are two of the most popular ingredients for suppressing or stopping pigment formation. With the help of an experienced aesthetician, you can find products that contain one of these gold-standard ingredients that will align perfectly with your treatment plan and skin condition.

Tranexamic Acid and Hydroquinone share the goal of lightening the skin, they differ in their actual mechanism of action. Tranexamic Acid was initially used to promote wound healing but has gained popularity in skincare due to its associated skin-brightening properties. Rather than directly inhibiting melanin production, Tranexamic Acid works by suppressing the transfer of melanin from melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) to the surrounding skin cells, thereby reducing the appearance of dark spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Tranexamic Acid is generally well-tolerated by all skin types without irritation. It is commonly found in serums, creams, and sheet masks.

Hydroquinone has long been considered an extremely effective ingredient for skin lightening. It directly inhibits the activity of Tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for melanin production. Hydroquinone effectively lightens stubborn areas of hyperpigmentation, including melasma, by reducing melanin production. Available in different concentrations, it is commonly used to target specific spots or combined with other ingredients in prescription-strength formulations. Due to the aggressive nature of Hydroquinone, it is generally recommended for a short time and monitored for rebound effects of overuse.

Proper use of both ingredients can lead to a more even complexion and a reduction in the visibility of hyperpigmentation and sun damage. It is essential to use products appropriate for your specific skin condition.

Our Practice carries top-of-the-line medical-grade skincare products, many containing Tranexamic Acid or Hydroquinone for treating hyperpigmentation and sun damage. Our clinical providers are very experienced with these ingredients and can, based on your skin condition and concerns, recommend the best options to reduce dark spots and brighten your skin.
