Breast reconstruction with expanders or implants is performed at the same procedure as the mastectomy. This takes place in the hospital operating room under general anesthesia. The reconstruction portion of the procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours per side. After surgery, you will be placed in a support garment, which will be worn for the first two weeks. Some patients choose to stay overnight at the hospital before going home, some go home the same day. You may feel some pain or discomfort, but most patients are able to manage post-operative pain or discomfort with just a few days of pain medication. You can walk the day of surgery, but running or lifting anything greater than 5 pounds is not recommended until four weeks post-procedure. This allows the expander or implants to heal in the correct position. Patients usually return to work within 2-3 weeks. The timing of the breast reconstruction process varies on the type of reconstruction you have (expander or implant).
